We’re looking for new trustees

We’re looking for two new trustees to join our Board of Trustees, increasing the group from six to eight.
We’re ideally looking for people from a PR & marketing background or who have experience of running their own business.

Below is an outline of our organisation and the role.

  • We provide bereavement support to children and their families.
  • Our main work is to provide non-residential bereavement support weekends – around 13 each year across Kent.
  • Each year, we support up to 300 children at our bereavement support weekends.
  • We also provide one-to-one support for children, a parent and carers support group, work with teenagers, provide education in schools and work with families affected by suicide, traumatic death and still birth.
  • We do not receive any statutory funding and are reliant on grant making trusts, donations and fundraising to provide the free of charge service to our families.

We have approximately 100 volunteers who work with us 


The role of a trustee
Being a trustee of the Holding On Letting Go (HOLG) will require you to:

  • Work with fellow trustees to shape, drive and monitor the charity
  • Prepare for and participate fully in board meetings- approximately bi monthly
  • Act reasonably in decision making and leadership of the organisation
  • Ensure the proper management and administration of the charity
  • Use any specific skills, knowledge or experience you have to help the Board of Trustees reach quick and sound decision by leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise
  • Promote the work of HOLG externally and attend events as needed
  • To attend mandatory training and undergo a DBS check
  • Manage risks with a considered, proportionate and balanced approach
  • Support HOLG’s Chief Executive and staff



The statutory duties of a trustee:
Trustees are responsible for the work that HOLG does and how it does it. Trustees have a number of statutory duties, which are:

  • To ensure that the organisation complies with its governing document, charity law and any other relevant legislation or regulations
  • To ensure that the organisation pursues its objects as defined in its governing document
  • To ensure the organisation uses its resources appropriately in pursuance of its objects for the benefit of bereaved children and their families
  • To contribute actively to the board of trustees’ role in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets
  • To safeguard the good name and values of the organisation
  • To ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation including having appropriate policies and procedures in place
  • To ensure the financial stability of the organisation


Trustee person specification
HOLG seeks to appoint a trustee who:

  • Has experience and an understanding of running a business OR
  • Has experience and an understanding of marketing and PR
  • Is committed to the organisation and has sufficient time and willingness to contribute effectively to board meetings and other charity activities as needed
  • Is able to work effectively as a member of a team
  • Has a passion for the social sector and social change


Board structure
HOLG is currently governed by a board of 6 Trustees comprising a Chair and a Deputy as well as representatives in HR, finance, clinical, fundraising and a service user.

The role is unpaid, but reasonable expenses are paid in line with HOLG’s expenses policy.
