Trustee Brian takes on third Iron Man for HOLG

If you’ve booked a nice holiday this August, spare a thought for our trustee Brian Downton, who will be in Denmark, raising money for us at the Copenhagen Iron Man!

Brian, owner of Downton & Ali Associates Financial Advisers, is known for his love of challenges and has covered hundreds of miles on land, sea and by bike over the years in support of good causes. August’s event will be his third Iron Man and will see him take part in a 3.8km open water swim, a 180km bike ride and a full marathon.

Sponsorship funds will go towards his target of raising a fantastic £10,000 this year to be split between HOLG and The Openwork Foundation, which supports vulnerable children.

A personal goal for Brian is to complete the course in under 13 hours, beating his time of 13 hours 45 minutes which he set at his first Iron Man in Austria. Preparation is well under way with Brian taking on a number of other events in the lead-up as part of his training, including:

  • 1stApril – Man Of Kent Audax cycle challenge – 200km
  • 7thApril – Folkestone 10-mile run
  • 16thApril – Easter Duathlon – 9km run/30km bike/5km run at Gravesend Cyclopark
  • 1stMay – Tonbridge standard distance triathlon
  • 7thMay – Sevenoaks sprint triathlon
  • 14thMay – Darent Valley 10km run
  • 18thJune – Dartford Bridge Triathlon
  • 1stJuly – Midnight Man Half Marathon
  • 9thJuly – Cotswold Classic Triathlon – half Ironman distance
  • 6thAugust – Dartford Bridge Big South East Swim – 5km open water
  • 12thAugust – Midnight Man Triathlon
  • 20thAugust – Ironman Copenhagen

Not one to take it easy, Brian plans more events in the latter part of the year including an overseas bike ride which he takes part in every year and has seen him travel as far as Albania, China, Nepal, India, Vietnam and Cambodia.

Brian said: “The Copenhagen Iron Man is the big one for me this year and I’m really looking forward to it. It’s a good time of year to do a challenge, in terms of the weather, and there are three of us taking part with our partners coming along to cheer us on.

“Any event I take part in throughout the year, I use it to raise sponsorship money. Both HOLG and The Openwork Foundation do incredible work with children who are vulnerable or are going through a difficult time so it’s really important to me to raise funds for them both. Also, my work with the Foundation supports HOLG as we recently secured a grant through them for £15,000 which will be used to help children in a family facing terminal illness.”
