Friends and family are always the most important consideration when making arrangements for after you’ve died, but it is also an opportunity to support a cause close to your heart.

Leaving a gift in your will for HOLG is a wonderful way to leave a legacy and make a real difference to a grieving child and their family.

If this is something you would like to consider, here are some questions we get asked a lot about how to do it.

How do I leave a donation to HOLG?

When your will is drafted, simply include details of the amount you would like to donate and be sure to include our full address and registration number: Holding on Letting Go Wisdom Hospice, High Bank, Rochester, Kent ME1 2NU, Registered Charity No. 1191016.

Do I need to let HOLG know I will be including them in my will?

No, you do not have to inform us in advance. As long as your will is properly drafted, signed and meets legal requirements, any legacy will reach the intended recipient.

Can I choose what my donation is spent on?

You can, but please be aware that we will be bound by any stipulations you include in your will. This means for example, that if HOLG was given a £500 legacy to spend on buying materials for our bereavement weekends, we would not be allowed to spend the money on anything else.  Financial pressures on a charity can change and by the time we receive your donation, we may need funds to spend on projects or expenses that differ to those specified in your will.

Also, sometimes donors state that they do not wish for a gift to be spent on administration costs or salaries. However, these are vital expenses for the running of the charity and are generally more difficult to get funded through grants. We are a small charity with small budgets and every penny counts!

For these reasons, it is more beneficial if you leave a gift with no conditions attached. Please be assured that your entire donation will go towards keeping the charity running and providing vital services to grieving children and their families.

How much should I leave as a legacy?

This is entirely your choice; we are grateful for all and any donations. However, you might find the following useful:

  • £250 pays for the all the food and refreshments for one bereavement support weekend

  • £500 pays for 6 sessions of face-to-face pre-bereavement support for a child experiencing anticipatory grief

  • £1,000 covers the cost of training 10 volunteers to work alongside the children we support

  • £5,000 pays for one bereavement weekend where up to 20 children and young people receive much-needed support
