Holding On Letting Go has been partially funded by Children In Need for several years, but this year was the first time we have been approached by BBC South East to be one of the featured charities in the run-up to BBC’s live broadcast on 18 November 2016.
The BBC film crew attended our bereavement weekend at Demelza House, Sittingbourne in October. They followed one family in particular, who had lost Dad suddenly and unexpectedly in 2015. Mum, Sarah, attended the Parent and Carer group session, whilst Hannah, aged 12, and Gemma, aged 10, attended the full bereavement weekend. The BBC crew then visited the girls in their own home to ask how the weekend had helped them. All of this was shown on BBC South East’s local news programme on Thursday 17 November.

On the appeal night, Hannah and Gemma were invited to Bexhill-on-Sea, along with Programme Manager, Caroline Ford, for the filming of the regional programme. Gemma and Caroline were then interviewed live on air by Ellie Crisell. Gemma explained how much the bereavement weekend had helped her, and Caroline gave more details of the support offered to all of the children and young adults that attend the weekends.
What was the highlight of the whole Children In Need experience for Hannah and Gemma? It was a straight tie between meeting Pudsey and meeting Jane Beedle, runner up in the 2016 Great British Bake off!
