We have partnered with Greenwich & Bexley Hospice to offer a joint support programme for bereaved children and young people.
Our first joint working event was held in August 2022, where staff and volunteers at the hospice spent a day with the HOLG team and a group of bereaved children who had connections to the hospice.
The children enjoyed a lovely day involving arts, crafts and creativity, helping them to create precious items to remind them of their loved one. The children expressed that they had enjoyed feeling safe and secure and able to talk about their loved one in an understanding, non-judgemental environment. For many, this was their first experience of being with other children going through a similar experience and many friendships were made. Following the event, many parents and children told us that they planned to reconnect with the other attendees in the future.
For Greenwich & Bexley Hospice staff, it was a great opportunity to see what a difference bereavement support can make to a child as Debbie McSwiney, our Clinical Lead for Children & Families comments:
“Greenwich & Bexley Hospice staff do a wonderful job caring for patients facing terminal illness and supporting their families through the difficult time ahead. By working together and sharing expertise, we can help them continue to provide support to children and their families as they go through the grieving process and must be booked in advance.”
Further events are planned, with the next taking place at the hospice on Saturday 5th November. The sessions are open to families who have used the hospice.
